Penny Quilts


Penny teaches a number of classes and workshops for all levels of ability. She believes that

a solid understanding of basic techniques and skills will give any student the self-

confidence to progress with their own work. Sewing machines are generally available but

may need to be shared, depending on numbers. All classes are friendly and fun with an

informal atmosphere and plenty of tea and coffee!

Dresden Plate

A five week course over a morning or afternoon, we discover this delightful traditional pattern and its variations. Students will complete blocks to be made into a quilt, cushions or bags. We will look at quilting and finishing options. This course can be completed using hand or machine sewing.

Repeat block patterns

This 5 week course covering a morning or afternoon is perfect for the student wanting to make their own patchwork quilt or cushion. Using squares and triangles we will learn how to make templates, cut and sew fabrics in to a pleasing pattern. The patchwork is then layered with wadding and quilted. Finishing techniques are examined and demonstrated. Working by hand or machine this is an ideal course for beginners.


Appliqué for Beginners

This is an introductory course covering all aspects of appliqué for hand and machine sewing. We tackle needle turned, reverse and fused appliqué making samples that can be put together to make a small quilt, cushion top or bag front. The course lasts 5 weeks, over a half day per week.


Double Wedding Ring 

This tricky pattern can be completed to make a block to go towards a quilt or cushion. It is very popular made up as a wedding gift. The construction and template making


Mariners Compass

Draft this amazing and complex pattern. Sewing by the paper foundation method by machine we can manage sharp points with ease. A five week course over a morning or afternoon this will stretch the patience and expertise. The dramatic outcome is well worth the effort. This makes a stunning centrepiece for a quilt or make more and have a quilt to be admired.

Feathered Star

A difficult pattern to draw but a fabulous pattern to master. We will draw this out and make templates so this can be sewn by hand or machine. A beautiful centre for a medallion quilt or a really special round robin perhaps. Five weeks over morning or afternoon sessions.
